WHAT STARTED IT
The Adelaide River crossing became a stop for Overland Telegraph work and traffic to the Pine Creek goldfields. A hotel opened in 1873, anchoring services long before the town’s formal gazettal.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The railway from Darwin reached the crossing in 1888. During the Second World War, military facilities expanded around town. Official town gazettal came only in 1962, decades after the original transport settlement.
