Airlie Beach
A farm locality became the mainland doorway to the Whitsundays.
1936Beach land sold · resort settlement begins
WHAT STARTED IT
Airlie Beach began when waterfront land offered by the Queensland Lands Department was sold in 1936. Early residents largely farmed fruit and vegetables rather than serving tourists.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The opening of Shute Harbour in 1961 gave the district a major maritime base. When sugar cargo shifted elsewhere, the harbour and Airlie Beach concentrated on island transport and tourism. Hotels, marinas and the swimming lagoon progressively turned the settlement into a resort town.
