Atherton
Timber tracks opened a pocket that became a farm centre.
1886Town lots sold · tableland farm settlement
WHAT STARTED IT
Atherton developed at Priors Pocket, a spring-fed clearing reached by timber cutters and the road towards the Herberton tinfield. Survey and town-lot sales in 1886 established a stopping place for the surrounding tableland.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Chinese tenant farmers produced maize and rice before soldier settlement after the First World War. Rail arrived in 1903, and dairying expanded around a butter factory opened in 1909. Tinaroo Dam later supported a more diverse farm economy.
