Bacchus Marsh
A fertile valley became the first coach stop towards Ballarat.
1850Coaching inn opens · goldfields road stop
WHAT STARTED IT
Pastoral occupation and fertile river flats attracted settlement, but the Border Inn’s opening in 1850 gave Bacchus Marsh a clear roadside role. It served coaches leaving Melbourne for the western goldfields.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Ballarat’s rush brought heavy traffic from 1851. Chicory, orchards, dairying and food processing broadened the local economy; rail arrived in 1887. The valley’s proximity to Melbourne later encouraged substantial commuter growth.
