Bairnsdale
An inland port at the edge of the Gippsland Lakes.
1860First government town land sold
WHAT STARTED IT
Pastoral settlement and nearby gold discoveries created demand for a town on the Mitchell River. Boats could carry goods between Bairnsdale, the Gippsland Lakes and the sea, making this an outlet for wool, timber, hides and farm produce.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Wharves expanded in the 1870s, but the railway’s arrival in 1888 reduced shipping’s advantage. Dairying, vegetable growing and timber helped sustain the town’s role as East Gippsland’s commercial centre.
