Blackwater
A tiny rail stop became a major coal centre.
1967Open-cut mine begins · coal town expands
WHAT STARTED IT
Blackwater existed as a small railway settlement from 1877, but modern coking-coal discoveries transformed it. A mining lease in 1965 and open-cut production from 1967 required workers, housing and services on a new scale.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The town had only 77 people in 1961. Mine development drove rapid growth, while electrification of the line to Gladstone in 1988 strengthened the export chain. Several large mines now surround the settlement.
TURNING POINTS
1877Railway and post office open.
1965Modern mining lease granted.
1967First open-cut mine starts.
WHAT IT DOES NOW
A Central Highlands mining and service town whose jobs, population cycles and heavy rail traffic remain closely tied to metallurgical coal.
