Bundaberg
Timber came first; sugar defined what followed.
1867Early sawmill settlement
WHAT STARTED IT
Bundaberg’s early settlement depended on timber and river access. A sawmill on the Burnett provided materials for local enterprises, while the surrounding land attracted farmers. Sugar became the dominant industry after these beginnings.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
John and Gavin Steuart established their sawmill in 1867. During the 1870s sugar growing and milling expanded, supported by suitable soils and colonial incentives. South Sea Islander workers played a major part in building the local sugar industry.
TURNING POINTS

WHAT IT DOES NOW
A regional centre for sugar, horticulture, food and drink production, with tourism along the nearby coast. The Burnett and agricultural hinterland still shape its economy.
