Byron Bay
A dairy-and-cargo town became an international resort.
1888Jetty completed · farm produce port
WHAT STARTED IT
Byron Bay’s permanent town developed around a jetty built to ship timber and produce from the fertile hinterland. Stores, hotels and workshops appeared as the first jetty neared completion in 1888.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Rail arrived in 1894 and a major Norco factory opened in 1895, eventually producing butter on a remarkable scale. The lighthouse began operating in 1901. As shipping, whaling and dairy processing declined, surfing, alternative lifestyles and tourism remade the town.
