WHAT STARTED IT
Campbell Town developed at the Elizabeth River crossing on the route between Hobart and Launceston. Named in 1821 and surveyed in 1823, it served road travellers, a garrison and the surrounding pastoral properties.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Fine-wool sheep breeding strengthened the district’s agricultural identity. The convict-built Red Bridge opened in 1838, and an agricultural show followed in 1839, reinforcing the town’s role as a gathering place for farming country.
