Castlemaine
A goldfield camp with administrative ambitions.
1851Gold discoveries trigger the rush
WHAT STARTED IT
Castlemaine grew from the extraordinarily rich Mount Alexander goldfields. Gold drew people to the creeks, while a government camp and commercial centre developed to administer and supply the diggings.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Workshops, industry and regional services helped the town endure as the easy alluvial gold declined. Those roles, its historic streets and an arts community support a different economy today.
