A roadside village became the centre of a coalfield.
1905Aberdare mine opens · coal town surges
WHAT STARTED IT
Cessnock first served farms and travellers on the route between Wollombi and Maitland. The village remained small until development of the Greta coal seam created mines and workers’ settlements across the district.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Aberdare, the first mine at Cessnock itself, opened in 1905. By the First World War the South Maitland Coalfield supported numerous pits and thousands of workers. Pit closures from the late 1950s pushed the district towards other industries, especially wine and tourism.
