Chinchilla
The railway founded it; dairying and energy repeatedly remade it.
1878Railway construction camp · town begins
WHAT STARTED IT
Chinchilla grew from the workers’ camp created when the western railway arrived in 1878. The line gave surrounding pastoral and farming country a depot and market town.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Closer settlement before the First World War expanded dairying, while biological control of prickly pear in the 1920s opened infested land again. Later grain, melons, coal and gas diversified the district beyond its long dairy phase.
