Claremont (Tas.)
An Australian Bournville built on a wartime army camp.
1920Cadbury chooses the Claremont site
WHAT STARTED IT
In 1920 a commission for Cadbury, Fry and Pascall chose the 247-acre Triffitt’s Point estate, a Derwent peninsula used as an AIF camp during the war, for an Australian chocolate factory. They were drawn by the cool climate, plentiful electricity and shipping, and room for a model village for employees.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Construction began in 1921 and chocolate production started in January 1922, with staff housed in a garden estate beside the works on the Bournville model. Dairy Milk was made here from 1928, and after the Second World War housing estates spread across the farmland of the surrounding Glenorchy district.
