Clunes
One of Victoria’s first gold-rush towns.
1851Gold discovery sparks a rush
WHAT STARTED IT
Payable gold at Clunes helped trigger Victoria’s 1851 rush. Digging and later quartz mining created demand for a town with stores, trades and services.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Deep mining supported substantial buildings and businesses. When the mining economy faded, much of the historic centre survived rather than being replaced by rapid growth.
