Cooktown
A goldfield needed a way to the sea.
1873Port established for the Palmer goldfield
WHAT STARTED IT
Cooktown developed as the port for the Palmer River gold rush. The Endeavour River offered a landing point for supplies and people bound for the inland diggings.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Cook’s ship had been repaired here in 1770, but the permanent colonial port came a century later. The rush brought many Chinese migrants and also violent dispossession of Aboriginal communities.
TURNING POINTS
1770The Endeavour is repaired in the river.
1873The Palmer gold rush brings a port settlement.
1874The name Cooktown is adopted.
WHAT IT DOES NOW
A small regional centre and gateway to Cape York, supported by services, tourism and fishing. Museums and local cultural sites tell stories extending well beyond the gold rush.
