Cootamundra
A railway crossroads that began beside a pastoral run.
1861Village surveyed · pastoral service centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Cootamundra was surveyed beside Muttama Creek to serve the surrounding grazing country. The nearby station supplied its name; shops and town lots followed, with the Muttama gold rush bringing another stream of customers.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Railway junction traffic and branch lines helped move the district’s farm produce. Agriculture and rural services supported a continuing role beyond the original pastoral village.
Read the fuller history
The railway arrived in 1877 and turned the village into a junction town. Branch lines strengthened its role in moving farm produce. Cricket added another identity: Donald Bradman was born here in 1908.
