Gold made the town; mineral water helped reinvent it.

WHAT STARTED IT
Daylesford developed around gold discoveries near Wombat Creek. Miners needed shops, lodging and government services, turning scattered diggings into a town. Nearby mineral springs later provided another reason for people to visit.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Family accounts date the first find to 1851, while official recognition followed in 1852. By 1859 Daylesford had its own municipal council. Mineral-water businesses and bathing developed alongside the mining economy, eventually giving the district its spa-town identity.
