Deniliquin
A river crossing became the stock country’s marketplace.
1850Town gazetted · stock-route crossing
WHAT STARTED IT
Deniliquin formed at an Edward River crossing where stock routes from New South Wales and Queensland converged on the way to Victorian markets. A punt, inn, store and post office served drovers and pastoral stations.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The townsite was surveyed in 1848 and gazetted in 1850. A bridge opened in 1861 and a private railway from Echuca in 1876 tightened its link to southern markets. Irrigation later broadened the district’s farming.
