Doyalson
A highway village on the edge of the northern coalfield.
1962Munmorah State Coal Mine opens
WHAT STARTED IT
Doyalson sits where the Pacific Highway passes near Lake Munmorah, and its name is believed to join the surnames Doyle and Alison. From the 1960s it stood beside a new coal and power complex, with a state coal mine and Munmorah Power Station built close to the coal.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Munmorah Power Station came into service between 1967 and 1969, cooled by water from Lake Munmorah and fed with coal from nearby mines. The mine closed in 2005, and the power station was retired in 2012 and demolished by 2018.
