A western service town anchored by a river and a courthouse.
1849Village gazetted
WHAT STARTED IT
Dubbo developed as a trading and administrative centre for pastoral settlement along the Macquarie River. A store and inn were joined by a courthouse, police station and lock-up, concentrating services for a wide rural district.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The village was gazetted in November 1849, with land sales following in 1850. The Old Dubbo Gaol records the town’s early role in administering justice. Its importance increased as settlement and transport networks extended across western NSW.
