Echuca
Where riverboats met the railway.

WHAT STARTED IT
Echuca’s position on the Murray, close to Melbourne, made it a natural river crossing and trading point. A punt and riverside businesses preceded its development into a major inland port.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The railway made river cargo easier to export, but competing rail routes later took trade away. District services and, from the 1960s, wharf and paddle-steamer tourism supplied later roles.
Read the fuller history
The railway connected the Murray’s paddle-steamer traffic to Melbourne. Wool and other produce moved through the wharf before expanding rail networks reduced the need for river freight. Major Campaspe River flooding inundated Echuca during the October Victorian floods.
