WHAT STARTED IT
Pastoral settlement began around Esperance Bay in 1864. Gold discoveries inland turned the small port into an entry point for people and supplies heading to the Eastern Goldfields, prompting the town site’s gazettal in 1893.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Its gold-rush boom was followed by fluctuating fortunes. From the 1960s development of the surrounding sandplain as agricultural land gave the region a stronger farming base.
