Farina
A wheat-growing dream at the edge of the desert.
1878Town established as Government Gums
WHAT STARTED IT
Farina grew along the advancing northern railway, with hopes that the surrounding country could become productive wheat land. Its eventual name, meaning flour, captured that agricultural ambition.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Good seasons encouraged growth, but unreliable rainfall made cropping difficult. Railway changes and declining local trade gradually emptied the town, leaving stone ruins.
