WHAT STARTED IT
The Fernie Lawn run was taken up in 1842. Bullock wagons and drovers stopped at the Brisbane River crossing before travelling farther into timber and grazing country.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Smaller farms followed in the 1860s and cotton ginneries responded to the American Civil War shortage. The first school opened in a former cotton store in 1874.
