Fremantle
The sea gateway to the Swan River Colony.
1829Port settlement established
WHAT STARTED IT
Fremantle was established as the colony’s commercial port, at the mouth of the Swan River. Settlers and supplies landed here before moving inland, giving it a role distinct from the government capital at Perth.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The early port faced difficulties getting ships safely into the river. Later harbour works and the colony’s expanding trade made Fremantle the principal shipping gateway. Warehouses, merchants’ buildings and maritime facilities accumulated around its West End.

WHAT IT DOES NOW
