WHAT STARTED IT
Gatton occupied a useful stopping and horse-change point between Ipswich and the Darling Downs. As free settlers took up fertile Lockyer Valley land, the road village became their commercial centre.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The village was gazetted in 1855 and the railway arrived in 1866. Gatton Agricultural College opened in 1897, reinforcing the district’s agricultural purpose; dairying and intensive crops followed.
