SAPlanned settlement
Gawler
A planned gateway became South Australia’s first industrial country town.
1839Town laid out · gateway to northern farms
WHAT STARTED IT
Gawler was laid out in 1839 at the junction of routes north from Adelaide, with water and nearby farmland supporting settlement. Its planned position made it a market and service centre for wheat growers and pastoral districts.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Rail from Adelaide arrived in 1857. Flour mills, foundries and agricultural-machinery makers turned Gawler into an important industrial town during the later nineteenth century, leaving an unusually substantial civic streetscape.
