Hervey Bay
Sugar transport and seaside holidays created a linear coastal city.
1896Railway reaches Pialba · coast and sugar settlements connect
WHAT STARTED IT
Hervey Bay developed from several small coastal settlements serving farms and holidaymakers. Sugar replaced earlier pastoral and cotton ventures, while the railway from Maryborough to Pialba opened in 1896 for produce and passengers.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The long Urangan pier, completed in 1917, handled sugar exports. After rail declined, the linked coastal settlements grew through retirement and tourism; Hervey Bay became a city in 1984.
