Hill End
Gold first. Artists later.

WHAT STARTED IT
Payable gold brought diggers into the Hill End and Tambaroora district in 1851. Rich quartz reefs later made Hill End the centre of a much larger rush.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The spectacular gold specimen associated with Beyers and Holtermann made headlines in 1872. Mining then declined, but the surviving streets and surrounding hills attracted painters and photographers.
