TASPlanned settlement
Hobart
A penal colony with a sheltered harbour and freshwater.
1804Settlement established at Sullivan’s Cove
WHAT STARTED IT
Hobart developed at Sullivan’s Cove after David Collins rejected the earlier Risdon location. The cove offered a better harbour, freshwater and shelter, supporting the new southern settlement and its convict population.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Founded at this site in 1804, Hobart became the administrative centre for southern Tasmania and later the whole island. Shipping, whaling, wool exports and workshops sustained its growth. Salamanca’s warehouses reflect the importance of the nineteenth-century waterfront economy.
