Hughenden
Grazing country had a town before it had a railway.
1877Town surveyed · pastoral centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Hughenden was surveyed to serve the Flinders River pastoral district. It took its name from Ernest Henry’s station, established during the expansion of grazing runs into the area. Hotels and services preceded the railway.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Rail from Townsville arrived in 1887, making Hughenden a western railhead until the line extended to Winton. A town bore completed in 1904 supplied artesian water, supporting travellers, stock and gardens.
