WHAT STARTED IT
Farms and orchards lined the Huon, but the 1876 bridge made one crossing the practical focus for shops, a hotel, wharf and road traffic. The settlement grew around that connection.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
By the 1880s Huonville was the main town north of Franklin. Apple growing, packing and river shipping sustained it for decades; road transport, salmon farming, wine and diversified produce later changed the valley economy.
