1880Sugar settlement develops
WHAT STARTED IT
Innisfail’s growth was driven by sugar plantations around the Johnstone River. Thomas Henry Fitzgerald’s venture helped establish the settlement, and the river junction provided a useful focus for trade and services.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The town was originally called Geraldton, later becoming Innisfail to avoid confusion with the WA port. Cyclones repeatedly damaged the settlement. Rebuilding, particularly after the destructive 1918 cyclone, contributed to the distinctive twentieth-century streetscape.
