Inverell
A store at a crossing grew into a New England centre.
1855Townsite petitioned · river-crossing trade
WHAT STARTED IT
Colin and Rosana Ross opened a store beside a well-used Macintyre River crossing in 1853, serving settlers and teams travelling north. A mill, inn and town petition followed as farming spread across the district.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The town became a municipality in 1872 and rebuilt on higher ground after the same year’s flood. Tin at nearby Elsmore and diamonds at Copeton brought miners and capital; rail arrived in 1902.
