Ipswich
A town that began by making mortar for Brisbane.

WHAT STARTED IT
Ipswich began as Limestone, a small convict outpost exploiting deposits beside the Bremer River. Lime was needed for construction in the Moreton Bay penal settlement, giving this inland site a very specific early job.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Convicts quarried stone and operated a lime-burning kiln. After the convict era, the river landing became a commercial centre for inland settlement. Renamed Ipswich in 1843, the town developed coal mining, rail workshops and other industries.
