WAPlanned settlement
Joondalup
A city centre drawn up in the 1970s, in bushland beside a lake.
1976Joondalup Centre Act passed
WHAT STARTED IT
Perth’s metropolitan plans pointed growth north along the coast, and the State set out to build a satellite city as the capital of the northern corridor. Bushland on the shores of Lake Joondalup was chosen, and Parliament passed the Joondalup Centre Act in 1976.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
When the Joondalup Development Corporation was appointed in 1977 the site was almost all bushland. A college campus, the railway, Lakeside Joondalup and Arena Joondalup arrived between 1987 and 1994, and Joondalup became a city in its own right in 1998.
