WHAT STARTED IT
Copper discoveries in 1842 led to a commercial mine opening in 1844. Miners, suppliers and families formed a settlement around an industry that brought badly needed income to early South Australia.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The mine drew workers from several countries, including a substantial Irish community. Agriculture, manufacturing and rural trade helped the town continue beyond the copper era.
