Kempsey
A punt anchored a cedar town on the Macleay.
1836Private town subdivided · Macleay River crossing
WHAT STARTED IT
Enoch Rudder established a punt across the Macleay River and subdivided land for a private town in 1836. Cedar cutting created the first strong commercial reason for settlement, before grazing and farming took over as the accessible timber diminished.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Kempsey became a borough in 1886 and rail arrived in 1917. Dairying sustained the valley through much of the twentieth century; the Akubra hat factory, established locally in 1974, added a distinctive manufacturing story.
