Kurri Kurri
A government town built for colliery families.
1902Mining town laid out · Greta coalfield
WHAT STARTED IT
New collieries on the Greta seam created camps full of miners and families but little permanent housing. The government laid out Kurri Kurri on Crown land in 1902 to serve the surrounding South Maitland coalfield.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Land sales began in 1903 and the population exceeded 1,300 within a year. Nearby pits at Pelaw Main, Stanford Merthyr and Richmond Main supported a dense mining district; mechanisation and closures later removed much of that employment.

WHAT IT DOES NOW
A Cessnock-area service town whose hotels, miners’ cottages, murals and nearby Richmond Main remains keep its coalfield origins unusually visible.
