Kyneton
A teamsters’ camp became a bluestone goldfields gateway.
1850Town gazetted · goldfields supply centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Kyneton was surveyed near a Campaspe River crossing used by teamsters and gazetted in 1850. Farms, a court and flour milling already served travellers before the nearby gold rushes created extraordinary demand.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Supplying the goldfields, coaching traffic and the railway strengthened an older farming market. Local services, visitors and commuting later gave its streets and businesses new uses.
Read the fuller history
From 1852 Kyneton supplied the Castlemaine and Bendigo fields and became a major coach stop. Local bluestone gave its building boom a distinctive appearance. Rail arrived in 1862, preserving the town’s transport and market role.
