1890Town named · forest clearing and dairying centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Leongatha formed as dense South Gippsland forest was cleared for farms. Dairying began in the 1880s, the town was officially named in 1890 and rail access followed in 1891.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
A government labour colony opened in 1893, employing men to clear land and experiment with crops. The butter factory, opened in 1895, expressed the industry that would dominate the district. Rail closed in 1993 but dairy processing and farm services endured.
