Lismore
Cedar boats helped make an inland city.
1856Town gazetted · river transport centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Lismore developed at the head of navigation on the river’s North Arm, now the Wilsons River. Cedar cutting and river transport gave the pastoral property a commercial advantage; its home paddock became the surveyed town.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Dairying replaced much of the cedar economy, and rail arrived in 1894. Lismore became a city in 1946. Its low riverside location also made flooding a recurring threat, culminating in the catastrophic flood of 2022.
