Long Jetty
Named for the jetty where the Wyong ferry tied up.
1915The long jetty opens
WHAT STARTED IT
Long Jetty lies on the peninsula between Tuggerah Lake and the ocean, which before good roads was reached by launch across the lake from Wyong. William Henry Price built a jetty to serve his estate subdivision, and it gave the suburb its name.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Launches carried passengers and mail between the jetty and Wyong, and in 1921 a post office opened at ferryman W. E. Colmer’s store. Cottages, guest houses and a theatre followed for holidaymakers. When a storm swept the jetty away in 1927, residents told council it meant everything to the locality.
TURNING POINTS
1915W. H. Price asks Erina Shire Council to take over his jetty, and council agrees.
