Maitland
River navigation and rich farms made an early inland city.
1833Government town proclaimed · river-trade centre
WHAT STARTED IT
Maitland developed at the head of navigation on the Hunter River, where farms, riverboats and the Great North Road converged. A government town was planned on higher ground while a busier private settlement grew across Wallis Creek.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
East and West Maitland became municipalities in 1863 and merged with Morpeth in 1944. Coal added a major hinterland industry from the late nineteenth century. Repeated Hunter floods, especially the destructive 1955 event, shaped streets, bridges and flood planning.
