Mareeba
A roadside inn became a railhead for mining country.
1893Railway arrives · Granite Creek becomes Mareeba
WHAT STARTED IT
A store and inn at Granite Creek served the road from Port Douglas to the Herberton tinfield. When rail from Cairns reached the crossing in 1893, the surveyed station settlement was renamed Mareeba.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Branch lines made Mareeba a railhead for mines across the tablelands and inland. Agriculture then became more important: tobacco expanded from the 1920s and Tinaroo Dam, completed in 1958, enabled irrigation and crop diversification.
