Maryborough
A wool port that later served goldfields and migrants.
1847Woolstore established on the Mary River
WHAT STARTED IT
Maryborough began as a river shipping point for wool from inland sheep stations. A woolstore and wharves near the head of navigation let pastoral produce reach coastal shipping without an overland journey to a more distant port.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The original settlement developed from 1847–48 before activity shifted to the present town site. Port-of-entry status in 1859 allowed direct overseas arrivals. Gympie’s gold rush expanded trade, and engineering and manufacturing added to the port economy.
