Maryborough, Victoria
Gold built it; factories kept it going.
1853Gold discovered · rush town forms
WHAT STARTED IT
Rich alluvial gold discovered in 1853 brought a rapid rush to Maryborough. A surveyed town, police camp, newspaper and public services followed as it became the commercial centre of surrounding diggings.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Rail lines opened in several directions in 1874–75, making Maryborough a junction. When mining waned, civic leaders deliberately attracted industry: knitting, toolmaking, food processing and printing helped sustain the town through much of the twentieth century.
