Merredin
Granite runoff helped steam trains cross dry country.
1893Railway arrives · settlement shifts to station
WHAT STARTED IT
Merredin served travellers on the route to the goldfields, where water was crucial. Railway arrival in 1893 drew settlement towards the station. Runoff collected from Merredin Peak supplied a dam used by steam trains.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The Goldfields pipeline added a reliable water connection in 1903. Agricultural development then made Merredin a wheatbelt service centre rather than merely a stop on the way to the mines.
