Moe–Newborough
A rail town became a brown-coal workforce centre.
1877Railway arrives · town shifts to present site
WHAT STARTED IT
Moe’s earlier settlement moved south when the Gippsland railway arrived in 1877. The station site gathered hotels, banks, shops and government offices and became the practical gateway to the Latrobe Valley.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
The townsite was surveyed in 1879. Nearby brown-coal mining and electricity generation at Yallourn transformed Moe into a workforce and service centre; Newborough expanded alongside planned power-industry housing.
