Morpeth
The Hunter’s goods once passed through here.
1821Land grant precedes the river-port town
WHAT STARTED IT
Morpeth developed on Edward Charles Close’s land grant at a useful shipping point on the Hunter River. It connected farms and inland settlements with vessels travelling to the coast and Sydney.
WHAT SUSTAINED IT
Warehouses, merchants and wharves turned it into a busy river port. Improved rail and road transport gradually reduced that role, leaving a compact commercial streetscape.
